Brake pads

Your brake pads are an important component of your braking system and they are a part that you shouldn't ignore. Friction is caused when the brake pads compress against the brake rotors and this friction makes your car stop. This means hard work for your brake pads, every time you stop. The amount of pressure that is required of them to halt a moving vehicle is enormous and gives off a lot of heat which slowly degrades the brake pads.

Worn brake pads mean impaired braking which is dangerous for you and others. That's why regular inspection and measuring of your brake pad condition is necessary.

How do I know when it's time for a brake pad replacement?

Brakes that squeal are a warning that your brake pads are getting thin. Many pads have a small metal piece set into them which will scrape on the disc when your brake pads are getting worn, causing that high pitch noise. However, this doesn't mean you should wait until you hear noises to get your pads looked at, we advise having your brakes inspected at every service.

It is important to remember that noisy brakes are not only caused by normal wear and any unusual noises anywhere in your car should always be investigated by a qualified professional mechanic.

At Orient Street Motors we offer a 65 Point Vehicle Inspection Report free with every car service. As part of our inspection, we inspect the brake pads for wear and let you know if they require replacing. We can also recommend the right pad for your environment and driving style.

How regularly should my brake pads be replaced?

Brake pads can last anywhere between 15,000 to 70,000 km. This changes according to a number of causes such as regular heavy loads, driving style and conditions. If your brake pads are wearing out too often, your mechanic might advise using a heavier duty or heat resistant brake pad more suited to your vehicle.

Can I do my own brake pad replacement?

Some things are best left to trained mechanics and this is one of them. You should never let anyone but a qualified professional touch something as important to your safety as your braking system.
